There are 30 main story missions; however simply playing through these will not give you the complete experience of Sleeping Dogs. There are a whole host of side missions available to you that expand upon the overall story, and in many cases, you will have to complete some of these to unlock more story missions. I will, of course, make it very clear at which points these take place, and they are listed in this section of the walkthrough. Most missions are replayable through the in-game menus, so there are many achievements, specifically those relating to melee weapons and guns, that appear missable (due to the lack of guns available in Hong Kong), but can actually be used via this replay feature.
As with all open world games, you can approach the missions in whatever way you like. Simply for neatness, I’ve split each type of mission up (excluding the side missions that are necessary for the story), but it will be beneficial to you (particularly with regards to Face XP, and the bonuses given by that) to explore the side missions whilst also playing the Story Missions. It is totally up to you, and most missions will appear on the map as they become available (a few, specifically the Random Events will only appear when you are in close proximity to them, so it might be worth leaving those until the end, when you can easily keep track of them).
I will attempt to keep this walkthrough as spoiler free as possible; specifically, I won’t detail what is happening in the cutscenes, but only the action when you have control of Wei Shen. I will also not mention the names of characters until after they have appeared in mission, so this is the reason that I refer to several people as your “companion”, especially in the early stages of the game.
As mentioned in the Hints and Tips section of the guide, one of the most important things to do is keep your melee damage increase and health regeneration power-ups active as much as possible by eating and drinking. When you die or reload a checkpoint, you will have to reacquire these, so make sure you do. Both are fairly common, and you will likely find them simply by driving around for a short time.
If you are planning on following this guide exactly, there are a couple of achievements that will definitely unlock during the story. Based on the mission structure, they cannot be unlocked any later than the final mission, but can be unlocked earlier, depending on whether or not you've been playing the side missions alongside the story (which I recommend you do).
